This is FYI not for use in this instance.
In this instance the router substitutes for a PC. The IP address supplied by the cable system is used by the router. The router performs NAT network address translation, supplying local addresses of 192.168.1.2 - up to 253 if configured so. 253 being the maximum number of PCs you can connect by wire, limitation is generally 10 by wireless. This allows for any computers to be hot swapped or connected without the need to reboot either the modem or the router. If connecting one PC directly to the modem, then swapping PC's requires the modem to be rebooted. (To forget what was connected to it and start again.) I agree ref. rebooting your PC when changing from wired to wireless connection. I am used to Macs which pick up the change automatically BTW Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that Virgin supply these routers already configured with their own firmware, username and password. I have been supplying Netgear kit to my clients for the last seven years so am pretty familiar. Last edited by GreyGhost; 10th July 2008 at 20:25.. |

Is there a difference in a network between computers, and a network that can access the WWW?

I am know where near as clued up as you and all your respondants so far... but Is your Laptop's Wireless Lan button pressed on? When you start up your Laptop do you get a pop up message saying wireless networks found? If you go into control panel - Network Connections is your wireless connection shown as enabled ? Have you tried switching off any laptop installed firewall ? James |

A very good point. I had forgotten that Wireless card has to be switched on, on a Windows laptop. I have to admit I was stunned the first time I encountered this. |

Right... from memory...
The Desktop PC is connected to the Router with a cable. Router to the Modem with a cable. The Laptop will be used wirelessly? Assuming the Desktop is conecting ok. Also assuming you are using Windoze XP. On the Lappy you should have an Icon in the Systray (bottom right) for the internet. (looks like 2 monitors). Right click on it>Networks you should see something like this.. Click the Connect button you should see this. You'll need to enter the Network Key (password) which you'll get from the Router page (192.168.1.1)>Wireless Settings. Security Encryption (WEP Key). Once you've entered that into the box on the Lappy, you'll hopefully be connected...

Thanks for all your advice Lads, but I think we are going round in circles here.
The Wireless icon on the bottom right of my desktop says I’m connected to my network, when I click on view wireless networks I get this page! [IMG][/IMG] Now this clearly shows that my network is connected but I still cannot connect to the WWW. Unless I connect to the router with a cable! |
