Default Not Rover/MG

My son has a 51 plate Corsa 1.2. He's the second owner & had it for nearly 12 years. (96K miles)

It has recently started to run cooler, ie not getting upto its normal temperature on the gauge of ~90degC.

Passed it's mot in November with flying colours.
No leaks in the cooling system, header tank is at normal level.

Sitting in the drive it heats up just fine, upto the fan coming on at ~92degC (on the gauge).
I fitted a (external, insulated) temp gauge to the top hose between the T-stat and the rad. (first check in boiling water for a rough calibration, 100C ).

On his daily drive to work, ~10miles both gauges read max of 80C. Where it previously reach ~89C

Fitted a new T-stat at the weekend, but no change in the temp readings.

I'm now wondering if the new E10 fuel maybe having an effect?

Does this E10 run cooler?? As he is using this atm, but considering switching to the super unleaded for a few fill-ups to see what (if any) impact that makes.

Any thoughts?

I’d say it’s the stat, I have fitted two (inline and original) to my diesels and both are a bit rubbish!!

I swapped the online stat as I had noticed a drop in temp of around 5 deg, with the new stat fitted it is now reading 10 deg lower than previously.

The original stat on the ztt was replaced when I changed the water pump and this is Definately sticking open as it takes 15 miles to get near normal running temperature.

Some parts supplied These days are just rubbish.

Do what the black cab drivers did in the 1970s and stick a piece of cardboard over the radiator to keep the engine warm as you drove along.
Trikey will remember that. If it was a driver from the Stoke district of Coventry it would be a peice of spare carpet!

I had a Triumph 1500 TC (dolomite) where I fitted an old drawing board roller blind (shortened a tad) in front of the rad many many years ago for the same reason. worked a treat and I could adjust how far down was covered depending on the weather conditions

A radiator cover, might have been called a muff, was of course a common accessory in the
'60's, and further back.
They usually had 2 panels which rolled open, and were held in position with press studs.
The radiator could be fully blanked off, half blanked off, or (nearly) fully exposed to the air stream.
