The main problem with cost is down to how the insurance company risks your area or postcode. It seems now that even if you live in a very good area , then you can still pay a big premium. They now have penalty clauses for areas that have been targeted for "crash for cash" Apparently these gangs are moving to high class upmarket areas to reduce their risks of being caught, instead of the same areas , to deter suspicions from the insurance companies. Cannot win can we ...

LV (with discount for CSMA member)
£242.49 paid yesterday

2004 CDTi Conn SE, 8-9k miles
Manufacturing Engineer, 50, 2y NCB, BH23 (Christchurch)

Strangely for the 2nd year (with 1y NCB) LV were hardly any cheaper than the 1st year (which was about £470), so I went with Hastings, now back to LV.

For the first time l got a lower quote than Tesco Bank so l'm now with Hastings which started at £370. Tesco couldn't match it so with extra injury compensation & pay monthly the total is around £450 which was lower than Tesco's start quote which itself was higher than last year.
Interestingly Hastings offered a slightly lower quote with the opera singer than with the meerkats.

I was with them but no longer. I went from my S type 2.7D to an X-type 2.00D midway through the 12 month term and they loaded the insurance by adding an extra £460. It was cheaper (£208) to cancel and re-insure with Esure through 1st Alternative.

Loaded the insurance mid-term? On what basis? My stepdaughter had this but that was a black box policy, a complete scam if you ask me.

I assume they thought they had me by the short and curlies. It is a scam, there is nothing in my driving history or post code area to justify it. A quick search showed that had I taken the policy as a new customer, that loading would magically disappear.

Yes, sometimes it pays to see what your existing provider is offering you via the comparison sites & go that way rather than renewing direct.

<rant> I could not agree more. This is my 44th year of membership and frankly for £39 per year, it does nothing for me any more. I gave up observing a while back due to the politics apparently being treated more seriously than the road safety (ain't got no time for that, not today...).

I've had three consecutive years' worth of appalling admin and last month had my direct debit taken twice, four weeks apart. I now know they use a call centre somewhere in Asia who were frankly a waste of considerable time.

Back on topic and to cap it all, I experimented on two insurance comparison sites with disclosing and then not disclosing IAM membership. No difference in premium quotes. </rant>

Dougie.
