Reason I ask is, 4 cars pulled out in front of me during a 15 mile trip today

I think you may have a point there, the colour does blend in with the sky quite nicely. Colour and Crash Risk

Going back a few years a mate had a Honda 400/4 with a straight through exhaust. The horn didn't work but his opinion was if they can't hear the exhaust they're not going to hear the horn!

They probably thought " here's an old duffer in a 75 doing 20mph, I can easily get out in front of him".
