It doesn’t matter, it’s what you have upstairs in the brain department.

It is as simple as driving and adapting to the road/weather conditions, problem is some numpty fits winter tyres and straight away they think they can drive at 60 mph on ice and brake safely.

I have over 45 years experience driving artics, buses and cars and have never had any problems driving in winter weather. All I do is adapt to the conditions.
Wholeheartedly agree!!

I can testify to this - on our Skoda Yeti, I feel much safer on the damp, greasy fenland roads when the winters go on in November/December (I haven't done it yet, because it has been so mild until the last few days). Summer tyres feel much more skittish in winter conditions on our local roads.

I live in Russia over the winter and have winter tyres on my 4x4.(it is the law but not really enforced) Winter tyres are not just for snow and ice, and there are different types of winter tyre. They are designed to and work better in the cold conditions than summer tyres due to the compound difference from summer tyres. Even before the snow and ice set in here its well below zero most days and my tyres work just fine, but as written in previous posts just because its a 4x4 doesn't make it special you still need to drive to the conditions. I see many a Russian stupeedo in his BMW X whatever and land cruisers even with winter tyres stuck and skidded off the road because of their crazy driving attitudes.

I have the same experience Groundhog, many years in Europe and the Middle East taught me how to handle snow.

£50 a corner for s/h steel rims and pseudo-european winter compound. For me, it's a no-brainer.

I don't mind the car looking a bit daft for a couple of months. The smug face I wear when passing the Range Rovers, Q7s and X-thingys sliding across two lanes with their summer-chemistry-rubber more than makes up for it.

You wouldn't say "I could really do with a winter jacket, but I'll stick to my summer jacket, and just wear it more carefully"

I did not know that Brian. we had two Scanias D358FAJ and D359FAJ together with two Renaults. We operated out of Beckton on the A13 East London. London to Athens, Greece with groupage and occasionally radar equipment to Crete and Santorini for Plessey on the Isle of Wight.

It's possible they were supplied by Scania in Darlington, and registered in Middlesbrough John.

358 probably met it's maker in 2002, and 359 in 1999......

This wasn't you by the way??

No Brian, not me, although the face does seem familiar, I went to the USA to drive for a company in Oklahoma City in 1997. Tried for a green card but unsuccessful, I returned to the USA at the ripe old age of 66 to drive for a company called Pullen Bros, Sikeston, Missouri.

On the dock in a cold store in Indiana.

7 degC is the magic number
Below that and winter tyres come into their own in terms of grip for braking, cornering and traction
I find my ZT is much happier driving through standing water on winter tyres than it is on normal tyres.
