Be aware guys, a lot of places will just team clean then waxoyl (Or dinitrol) Over the components and underside.

To do the job properly you MUST remove any traces of rust and treat the area with a rust killer (Kurust etc) Otherwise you will just trap the rust underneath the waxy treatment.

Do it properly, get the shell and components 99.9% rust free before treatment.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I have found a more local one, who specialises in 4x4's. They suggested they could do a full treatment with a fancy rust stopper and coating (didn't catch the name) for £450 and supposed to be better than the Dinintrol system. I explained I was only really concerned about the rear arms, the rest was fine last time I looked - They are also willing to do a partial job for much less.

They are listed as David Spirett 0113 2813338, but David is no more, the guy who took over is Steve.

Quite, Trikey! My previous post suggested Dinitrol and a poster responded by quoting £1k. I think one will find that D or W are similar in price for a full application. Something like, Moisture remover, rust killer, possibly some type of bonding/key agent and then the protection fluid. The full works requires some parts on the car to be removed (headlamps, sill covers, door car etc., etc.

For the work involved I don't think £1k is over the top. One can always buy the products separately and do the injecting one-self.

Kev

That is what was described as the process for my recent quote at £450 for the full car doing, though not Dinitrol. I'll be going back there when I have more time, to allow them to get it up on the lift and have a proper look at it and what might need doing. There lift was occupied and the car was soaked when I got there. When I've been under it, everything looked good as new, except the lower rear arms, so they are my main concern.

Hmmm....I would still have suspicions but that aside, it's not what you can see, it's what is unseen. Was your vehicle treated by the first owner?

Kev

I'm the third owner, it began life as a lease car, then bought (maybe by leasee), followed by my buying it.

A while since I was last under it, but when I was - the under body looked to be very well protected, by the looks of it at the factory, but with certain exceptions. The rear lower suspension arms, front sub frame and some brackets bolted on after manufacture.

It's still on original brake pipes, but I am looking to have the last sections to the wheels replaced.

Default Update

My £450 local quote has now had it up on the ramps for a proper look with me. He says the under side, apart from one or two places is brilliant, just as it left the factory, so he just needs to touch up odd bits, plus the two rear arms - he called it an MOT inspectors dream. I have asked him to swap out the sections of brake pipes by the wheels as these have been a concern for me for a while, despite my attentions with greasing them regularly.

So despite the pipe replacements, it should come in at much less than the £450 :-)

I've just spoken to him and it's £430 for giving it the thorough going over with their rust stopping treatment and replacing the brake pipes at the ends where they rot, with copper. He originally said he was going to replace the rear by re-routing around the fuel tank, but decided when it came to it, to drop the tank and replace them as the original install. I was unable to drive due to an op. on my back on the 8th [1], so he had collect it last Thursday and will be returning it tomorrow at 10am, says he. I warned him about 'the sinking pedal syndrome' and suggested he seal the MS with a bit of plastic bag, to prevent air getting down to the ABS modulator - it must have worked, because he says the pedal is fine. It's been an annual pre-MOT task for me to clean, oil and grease those exposed pipes, to try to help preserve them and I have had it in mind to have them swapped out for the past couple of years.

[1] I had to go in hospital for the removal of a very large lipoma (growing lump of fat) on my back on the 8th, via a 5" incision. The lipoma began growing 40 years ago and I have been terrified to get any medical bod to have a look at it, until 18 months ago - when I finally plucked up the courage. 75 minutes on the table and 25 numbing injections later it was gone. They said they would normally do it under a general anaesthetic, but did it under a local because of my other health issues - so just yell if it hurts :-) It felt at times as if they were using a jigsaw to remove it :-), but it only hurt as the got deeper into the tissue where the anaesthetic hadn't penetrated.

It has though been painful to sit back, or even sleep on my back since then. My partner was quite concerned that I had torn the soluble stitches, plus the swelling and bruising - it felt fine to me, but I could not see it, so I took photos of the damage and sent them to the surgeon yesterday. A phone call from them today, suggests it looks absolutely fine. I'm at last able to stand a little pressure on too now, if I am careful.
