Tyres Do definitely make a difference. My son lives in Germany. Round trip around 1100 miles. With Goodyear Efficentgrip 195/65/15, 52/53 mpg. With Avon Z5 215/55/16, 48 mpg. Says it all really.

Hey, congrats on the 49.5. In the past I've enjoyed trying to get the absolute best fuel consumption figures from the tourer and some time ago, the stars aligned to give me enough opportunities on a tankful to drive over 700 consecutive grandad-driving miles.

More info here: https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...8&postcount=67

I managed 718 miles from one tankful, at an indicated 56.5 MPG, which turned out to be about 54 MPG once I'd done the maths.

Since then, I've put different tyres on the car and I'm no longer getting quite the same economy, and I'm not able to drive in such a controlled way either.

Today I drove from Cambridge to Chatteris with three of us on board and a bootful of kit, with the air con on 19 degrees and achieved an indicated 54.5 MPG, so that's around 50 MPG actual.

I still maintain that the figure of 60 MPG is achievable over a tankful but I don't think I'll get a chance to prove it as I'm now a father and have almost no time spare!!

There was a time, during the A14 roadworks, where the speed limit was 40 mph for miles on end that I was getting around 75 MPG indicated on several journeys to visit my parents. I never took the car back home on the same day to verify whether that figure was achieved with down hill and a following wind though.

My goal is to get 750 miles from a tankful, for no other reason that I've been told it's not possible - you never know, it may just be!!

Have the injectors reconditioned.
Best I saw on mine, single motorway journey approx 150 miles was 58mpg junction to junction. Door to door was 52mpg. Average mpg when doing long weekly runs was 49-51mpg.

I had 50mpg on my diesel manual on a long run.
On my diesel Auto,I achieved 47mpg on a long run, this ,I believe is helped by switching 'snow mode' even in Summer,as it puts it in the next gear, sooner.

I used to stick an extra gallon in the tank between fill ups then when"she" asked what it was doing to the gallon, I'd get her to do the maths, gallons to miles on trip mileometer. It would often raise a smile and get a "Hey! That's not bad for a V6 is it?" P.S. Don't tell her!

Round journey was 412 miles and i used 32.8 litres of diesel.
Now assuming my calculations are correct

32.8/4.55 to convert to gallons = 7.21 ish
412 miles/7.21 = 57.1 mpg

I am assuming that the pumps at the garage are properly calibrated and i used the same pump in the same garage at about the same time of night but i was a little surprised i was getting that sort of economy from a 160k engine and more than a little pleased
Especially as work paid me £100 to take my car.

Yep, the Avon's have more rubber on the road and thus more resistance plus a 16" wheel takes more power to move but that should be balanced out by a bigger wheel being more efficient once in a steady motion....

A left field guess might be the amount of cords/silicon/rubber mix a tyre has?
