Did you also take the opportunity to look at the springs, front and rear? When mine fractured earlier this year I initially thought that the handbrake had seized on. I also heard a terrible noise not unlike what you describe.

Mark, I would urge you once again to explore other possibilities but you don't sound at all keen! I'd say that DMGRS have done you a favour by not responding immediately. It's far better to wait for your mobile mechanic to expose the handbrake shoes and make an accurate diagnosis before putting your hand deep into your pocket, isn't it?

I wonder why mine haven't suffered this fate? Could yours perhaps have been inferior aftermarket shoes fitted by a previous owner? If so, then I agree that this could have happened to Mark's car.

Simon
I have suggested asking DMGRS if they will do sale or return so parts can be ordered "today" to make sure they arrive in time for the weekend

The backplates, pins, springs and cables were all good, just the de-bonded linings.
My other car though needed backplates, pins and springs - all corroded and unserviceable, the shoes although worn had not come adrift from the shoes.
Hope that helps, Paul.

Hello Simon,
I can’t say for sure, but everything looked pretty factory and undisturbed, if someone had been in there before the were certainly very careful with all the fixings etc.
The shoes looked identical to the ones on my other car that hadn’t de-bonded.

They are very tight indeed. How about investing in heavier duty tooling instead of paying the mobile mechanic?

It's not easy but once you have the wheel off and a good torch you can see/ feel where the retaining pins push through the backplate and twist to lock. If they are not there then that is your problem.

Hi Simon, the tools here are as heavy duty as they get, am borrowing farmer's tools normally used on tractors and other heavy equipment... the other day i watched as he used a sochet and a bar a metre long to tighten it lol.... admittedly he never unscrews anthing... just burns it off
I think in this case its the user at fault hopefully the mobile mech will av seen it all before

Have you checked for broken suspension springs?
