Frustrating is this.
The other day the engine ran fine with no problems at all. Next day on the way to work it coughed and cut out a few times. I disconnected the fuel rail pressure regulator and connected it up again. The engine ran fine after that. After work the engine ran fine until 45 minutes of a 60 minute commute it cut out at traffic lights. It started straight away. I stopped at a layby and fiddles with the regulator connector and got home with no problems. If it was a injector problem wouldn't it be all the time? I've cleaned the connectors in the regulator several times and the connection seems tight. What have I missed? All suggestions WILL be gratefully received.

Had exactly this what you are describing (restarting ok after it shut down) on my diesel automatic.
Only replacing a dodgy injector solved it. Over 30.000km and no issues since. Rob

I had runing problems after replacing the engine in one of our cars tracked it down to the wiring loom for the injectors changed it for the one from the old engine no problems since.I use the Silver hook diesel treatment from toolstation it seems to work well since using it on a regular basis never had a problem with emissions at mot and runs better and cleaner.

Hi Al.
When you say you removed the fuel rail pressure regulator, and cleaned the pins and connector i presume you are referring to the rail pressure sensor 1 2 3 some times the wiring can have an hairline crack in it close to the sensor, so will work intermittently. I would do a leak back test first on the car so you know which if any of the injectors are the cause. 4 Also do you have an under bonnet pump does that have good flow. 5 If it turns out to be an injector then a good known used one is about £40 then if you can not remove it your self labour if all works out getting it out, and cleaning up around it, new copper washer fitted an hour tops so another £45 plus depending on the garage rates. You have to hope that the second hand injector is good otherwise you are no better off. The above is a rough estimate. PS you are not that far from Terry Shaw, what he does not know about the R40 its not worth knowing, so maybe let him have a look at it for you.

This morning car played up starting then not ticking over properly. I messed with the wires to the regulator and car started and got me to work no problem. Artic I think you may be right about the wires. What can I do to see if they are playing up or not?

At the moment it seems that either the plug or it's wiring as a fault, or it could be the fuel sensor, you need to get it on a T4 which terry as, i will PM you his phone number and you can go from there.

An update for those who are interested.
I messed about with the connector and the car ran with no problems nearly all week. No problems with the fuel injectors at all. No cutting out or coughing and spluttering at all. Then on Friday it cut out at the traffic lights. Started straight away. Get to work and messed about with the connector again. Car is running fine again. Sounds to me the connector or wiring is at fault. Question if I may? Is the connector and bit of wiring a separate bit from the main loom or is it part of the main loom? I'm thinking if it's not part of the main loom I could replace it with a new one. Please advise as this electrics is new to me.
