Default Electric cut

Hi, our electric has just come on after being off for about 10 hours. I was up early and put on our wood burner as our c/h doesn’t work without electric. I then went and brought into the kitchen our old double camping stove. We made our breakfast and had hot drinks. It made me think that we could survive a longer period without electric, I also have a portable lpg heater. For me these backup options are important, I remember in our French house we were once without electric for over a week!

ours went off for about an hour a week ago. I have sorted out camping gaz lights and stoves. We too have a log burner but like you need electric to run pumps. During the day we may be able to run from the solar panels but we also have a caravan at home so cooking and heat would not be an issue.

Our electricity went off at 0130 switching off my CPAP machine and waking me up thankfully. My heating and lighting fallback from my camping box is 2 tilley lamps and a bialadin fire bowl for heating. Unfortunately the power came back within 2 hours so I wasn't able to recreate the early 70's power cut ambience.

I think the reliance on gas solely for heating in many houses is worrying. If electric or gas is cut, there’s no heating. We live in difficult times, I would advise everyone to have a backup plan. I’m currently sitting in front of a nice warm woodburner this morning, my oil c/h has been on for two hours, the stove will tick over for the rest of the day.

Have not had an open fire for some years, but the likelihood of power cuts this winter persuaded me to have my chimneys swept (cannot remember when they were last done). Not cheap as I have six in total, but I do like to be prepared! 2 tonnes of coal in the barn and a load of logs should keep the electricity on!

That was a good idea, doesn’t do any harm to be prepared. Who would help you if you were not?

My friend in Northumberland has just told me his electric was off for 27 hrs. It would be cold if you didn’t have any other form of heating! Luckily he has a wood burner.
