Default Timing Belt Replacement Questions

I think I've read most of the excellent threads on this KV6 job however before I start perhaps someone could answer a few questions for me. Apologies if they have been asked before.

1. Are the rear inlet camshaft pulleys keyed to the inlet camshafts?
2. Is the crankshaft pulley keyed to the crankshaft?
3. One thread says "Removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt requires the car to be in a high gear with brakes applied (manual). Automatic is as simple as leaving the car in park". How does leaving an automatic in park lock the engine?
4. The same thread goes on to say "Torque for the 2.5L V6 bolt is 160Nm. There is a special tightening sequence, tighten to 100Nm using torque wrench, then tighten 60 degrees, then 30 and 30 again". Can someone help me understand what is meant by 'then 30 and 30 again'. Perhaps the poster rephrased the service manual instruction.

Thanks for posting your questions Terry. I have done this job myself so can answer them for you.

You are correct, it won't. There is a two-part service tool which holds the crankshaft pulley (and therefore the engine) whilst the bolt is released but it's eye-wateringly expensive. Most people use a powered impact driver.

That is false information. There is no tightening sequence for the crankshaft pulley. The "30" refers to degrees, in other words two further angular tightening operations but there is no such instruction in the service manual.

Best wishes,

Simon

P.S. Could you give a link please Terry to the thread you've quoted in your questions 3 & 4?

I use an impact wrench like this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dc...nch-bare/890fu

It makes light work of undoing the crank pulley bolt

Hi Simon.
The 100Nm using torque wrench, then tighten 60 degrees, then 60 and 30 again". is for the diesel crank shaft bolt & pulley, has stated in the graph by gates.

This is a diesel engine which was tightened up with a rattle gun.

So in my opinion always best to use the proper tools for the job.

Thank you for answering my questions.

There are so many threads on the subject of timing belt replacement it's difficult to keep track of them. As requested here is a link to the one I referenced above.

For KV6 belt replacement I always suggest going on YouTube and watching the factory KV6 belt change video.
I don't do the job very often so I have my laptop in the garage and follow the steps shown in the video. It is a big help, although it really does pay to have the shop manual as well for the torque values etc.
One note, the video shows an engine with the earlier model rear cam pulleys but other than using a different rear cam locking tool the information is pertinant to all KV6's

LOL! I'm sure that engine had been apart 100 times.
And I love the old time technician in his shop coat and shirt and tie, and the flash presenter in his Talking Heads pastel suit.
They do give some good information though.
