Car battery isolator
Evening.
I have just connected one to try and it appears to do what it says it should. Anybody use these battery isolators? Are they OK? Scott.

Yep, they are great. i have one fitted and works well. When car is laid up for any long time, it is so much easier and no tools needed to disconnect the battery. Someone on here about 2 years ago suggested them to me – glad they did. Ray

These type of connectors were very popular as an anti theft device in their day, the idea being once the thumbwheel was unscrewed, there was a small fusible link left in place which kept the the radio code, alarm etc live, but if any attempt to start the car was made, this resulted in "blowing" the supply. Good idea, but of their time. Brian |

Fair point for sure. However I have noticed that if you completely remove the thumb screw and then try to undo the earth cable end bolt the isolator simply breaks in two (on purpose) leaving a part on the battery terminal and a now very difficult job of trying to remove the earth cable from the stub end of the isolator. I suppose this will certainly cause a delay in trying to connect the battery if you're trying to take the car without permission! I guess it could be handy if someone has your keys from your house for example? Any case, the reason for me is to stop the battery draining if my car is rested up for a while without using any tools - and it works great!

I had an Austin A90 in the 60s. This had a small tap that was inside a cutout in the back panel at the rear of the boot. I always turned it off, and got caught out a couple of times when starting the car after work.
