Physically there is no difference, you might be able to tell by driving it, but I rather doubt it..

Basically you should take it as a 116 unless proof positive to the contrary is provided.

One thing to note is that the 116 and the 131 are the same engine its only the software within the ECU that differs,

If it's a Cowley car ( eg black sills) then it will be a 116 bhp - unless it's been 'chipped'.

Think the 131 bhp came in soon after the move to Longbridge - and I believe it was called the CDTi to distinguish it from the 116.

Rover saw a chance to make some money and for a mere £500 or so you could have your 116 bhp upgraded. Top speed was said to improve by a mere 1mph - it is the acceleration, especially in the top range from above 45 mph, where the difference is felt. Fuel consumption was said to be improved - but in practice it tended to increase as the car gets driven harder! My Cowley car is now a 131 bhp - it has stickers on the door jams saying "X-Power 135".

Of course, the upgrade could be done by other means than through Rover and would be difficult to spot unless driven. My upgraded manual Cowley CDT has better acceleration than my V6 auto.

A few months after the 131 bhp car was introduced I recall the salesman telling me that "all the cars coming through the showroom now are CDTis". My inference was Rover had dropped the 116 bhp version completely.

What I was trying to say was is there a way of identifing the BMW engines fitted to our Rovers as being the 116 or 131 variant. Triumph identified their 125 and 150 bhp TR 6 engines by giving them a different prefix.

So is there a way of identifying which engine is in your Rover by way of the engine number? Not withstanding the info provided in the post 7 by 2Diesels.

Mike

If you can get a look at the registration document, full power CDTi's have
Variant - LH
Version- 05C
on the 5th and 6th line down on the blue part.
