Washer jets can be boiled on the hob in a saucepan of water with no problems. Does a good job of clearing the crud.

Took the Bear out for a good run. Needed to get the cobwebs out of the back boxes.

Fixed the rattling heat shield. The area around the oversized washers had disintegrated so time for a new method of repair.
A video on YouTube suggests using a bottle cap to avoid a reaction with the aluminium but unfortunately a bottle top wasn't going to cut it with size of hole I had. I decided to use the bottoms of four cans of coca cola (other brands are available). I drilled an 8mm hole in each of the cans, using snips cut off the bottom of the cans (be careful at this stage, I put a large gash in my thumb after catching it on the edge of the can) and then flattened them with a rubber mallet. I fitted them using a longer 10mm bolt than the one already fitted. I put a new large washer on top of the aluminium can for extra strength. Hopefully this will slow down the process that disintegrates the heat shield. |

It’s the front one. Stainless steel bolts are a good shout if I ever have to consider getting a new shield, hopefully this fix will be good for a couple of years. Time will tell.
I will have a look at the other shields and consider replacing the bolts with stainless steel ones. |

The heat shields disintegrate because of a galvanic interaction between the aluminum shield and the steel bolts.
Stainless bolts will just make things worse |

Took it to the garage for a major service, trans fluid, brake fluids, antifreeze, oils and filters, belts etc etc plus new brakes , disks and tyres. All going well she’ll be good for a few more years yet while my wallet recovers
