I have looked at my 02 car to see if the mod described in the how-to (by Jules) has been done.

It hadn't, so I opened the cover and flipped the block around. However, I don't think I need a ty-wrap or tape, since there is already some sort of metal clip on the cable. Am I right to leave that alone?

Pic attached, showing how I left things.

Hello.

Would it be possible to get some information on how to open a bonnet that has a broken cable?

Thanks.

Default Bonnet release warning.

Car failed its MOT on "unable to firmly close bonnet".
I told them it was OK - just push harder.
They banged it so hard that one of the cables jumped out of the (non-modified) splitter, and, of course, the bonnet was stuck.
I got the car home, and made a start on freeing the cable (reaching up in wheel arch, etc.). I was making some progress when my hand got stuck. It would not come out. I tried in vain for an hour, and finally admitted that I would have to get the fire brigade and cut the car up (I decided against amputation). By this time my hand had swollen up, and things were getting worse. I had no phone, and no-one would be coming home for another two hours.
I decided that my best chance was to have one last try, however painful . I put my whole weight behind it, and my hand finally stretched enough to come out. Not a pretty sight. Could have been worse.

JUST A WARNING

Good grief hope you're ok? !!

These cars are ageing now and most are in need of new front end bonnet cables and slam panel bonnet catch refurbishment.
Cables and catches fill with corrosion unless they were well greased early on in life and 6 monthly afterwards.

You should be able to pull the release with your little finger.
If not there is a corrosion problem or misalignment of upper catches with slam panel receptors.
Loosen the four 8mm bolts on the slam panel will temporarily ease the action.

The slam catch receptor assemblies and cables can be removed without removing slam panel so I urge owners to get these jobs done ASAP before it's too late.

Job is easier with slam panel removed and here's the link I wrote quite a few years back!
