Default It"s a dogs life.

My wife and I had our first dog 5 years before we got married .Over the past 40 years we have had more dogs and cats than i can almost remember some old ones that had lost their owners.
To date we have four Jacks the latest edition was going to be put down if not claimed .
In many cases I prefer dogs to people they never late you down but I think the time has come to say no more.

All I'll say is whoever coined the term "a dog's life" was never a dog in our house, pampered doesn't even come close.

I've had at least one dog around me since I was a toddler, more years than I care to remember! With my parents we had Jack Russels to a Doberman but personally I prefer smaller dogs, they live longer. The Doberman only lived 9 years but our toy poodle was over 18 when he passed away, thankfully in his own bed in his sleep.

We have a border collie who is allowed to sleep on the floor next to the bed at night. He is not spoilt or pampered and is very well loved and looked after and so friendly it is unbelievable .

Couldn't be without a dog, not sure about four at one go though
Great to give a great life to unloved pets too

Our Suzy was a rescue dog in a roundabout way. The woman we bought her from got her from an owner who neglected her and "just wanted rid of her"! When she got her home Suzy was very nervous and the woman spent all night gently shaving matted hair off her. The only reason she sold Suzy on to me was Suzy must have had some incident in her past and was so terrified by the mother's huge Alsatian type dog (I think its a Leonberger?) that she'd go for it! She still doesn't like big dogs.

I can't understand why the original owner "just wanted rid of her", she is the sweetest natured, gentlest dog we've ever had.

Our Monty is doing well - he's 10 now and we've had him since the week before Christmas. I reckon it takes 6 months to a year for a rescue dog to "Trust" - and we are seeing subtle changes - the most amazing is when I come home, his standing up to put his front paws on my shoulders whilst wagging his tail like crazy. This is a bit of a feat for him as he only has three legs so he stands on just one when he does this!!!

We try to stop him doing this as that leg has to be protected of course. Our older dog - 15 years - is a different dog now he has a companion again - I have never seen a dog so depressed after our other dog had a stroke and died last July.

If anyone wants to adopt an older dog - do check out the " Adopt an Oldie" website. This acts as a kind of clearing house for many charities that have older dogs needing homes.

At age 65 I did not want to take on a puppy - and there are so many fantastic older dogs needing homes - so do check out Adopt an Oldie
