Could be a slight coolant leak - thermostat housing seal, the O ring on the small pipe that goes into it or the top hose connection from the radiator where it enters the cylinder head are common leak points.

If the coolant level drops too low you'll notice the cabin heater going cold well before the engine overheats on these diesels.

Also check the stabbing into the expansion tank where the small hose enters under the filler cap - if that is blocked then it won't bleed properly and you'll get air left in the system.

If I take the filler cap off mine with the engine ticking over there's a jet of water coming from the left out of that very small pipe.---Normal I guess ???

assuming all is OK with the cooling system, What would be an average coolant loss be during normal use. In as much as topping up per ex amount of miles.
A,never needs topping up,or B,a little per one thousand miles ETC..

Never top mine up in the diesel, but I do notice that in the winter it drops below where it should be. But never have I topped it up. It’s like your oil being dead on the mark when you check it. Check it when you have been on a run, and it is slightly higher. It’s called expansion and contraction.Never put anything in the KV6 either.

My diesel was just like yours for the last 14 years.---

However for the first time for a year I had a quick look in the header tank.--It took half a cup of 50/50 anti-freeze mix.

Can't see any leaks at all but will check it again in a couple of weeks time.

well according to that I must have a slight leak, As for years I never had to top mine up, But now about every 750/1000 miles I need to top it up with possibly around slightly less than 1/2 a pint of mix.

I've seen this reported in diesels and KV6, but I've never seen my 1.8T do it. The head/heads must be air free of course. I've checked for it all temperatures and engine speeds, but it simply doesn't happen. Both bleed holes in the header tank - yes there are two - and from the IM are clear. I have observed a temporary bubbly flow when refilling the system from empty, but it doesn't happen any other way. So, I guess the pressure drop between the pump and header on the 1.8 is lower. Have any other 1.8 owners observed it?

With that amount of topping up that often you definitely have got a small leak somewhere.--Normally it can be found, usually on the underside of things, by the pink staining of the anti-freeze as the water dries off.---
