The rules I followed are;

Don't let the car idle for prolonged periods when cold, this also wears the engine prematurely.

Bring the car up to speed progressively and don't labour the engine trying to reach top gear to soon.

Avoid heavy braking, and don't carry around unessesary weight on board.

Keep an eye on those tyre pressures.

Oh and a well maintained engine, regularly serviced will give best fuel returns.

Fair enough, but boring as it may seem, there are people who enjoy the challenge of squeezing the maximum mileage out of every gallon, just as there are people who like to liberate every available horse power.

For me, I just enjoy the satisfaction of contributing as little in fuel revenue as possible

Work out the Kw output of your engine, then that of the alternator on full load, you will find that the alternator is an insignificant fraction and we rarely need the alternators full output. So driving with and without lights the mpg difference is not even measurable.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I've got a top tip for extra MPG when motorway driving- pick a HGV going somehwere 55mph+ (Eddies stobart trucks are best- limited to 56mph), then slipstream in behind them.
For added bonus, install a retractible harpoon on a wire rope mechanism in your bumper to fire onto the truck's rear to get a tow, then its infinite miles-per-gallon, retract when he goes off down the sliproad

In the first post I like number 10 . That means in this country we would never be able to use the car thus achieving maximum mpg.

If my car manages to get more than 35-6 ish mpg mixed driving, then someone else must be driving it.. heh heh...

I love the "go slower to save whatever" people, if it gets popular enuff I may get the outside lane on Motorways to myself innit.. Yayy ....

Just thought of something that does irritate me a bit, and thats when Joe Bloggs wants to do 70 mph, but the bloke in front of him is only doing 69.5 mph. So Joe decides to overtake him at 70.5 mph and covers ten miles doing it!! bah!!

If you decide to overtake, don't **** about at it, get it done! That will help keep the traffic flowing innit..
...

One last tip, which I think saves me a considerable amount...

Keep the car in a garage and fit drive gates. Together they make a considerable disincentive to get the out out and drive it unnecessarily. If the trip is not far, its much quicker to just walk or jump on a bus for a few stops.

Totally agree.
I'm a bit of a grandad on the motorway and am usually between 60/70mph.
I always wait for a gap the size of an airfield before overtaking and even then I bump up to 80/90mph to get past as quick as possible.
I know how irritating it is to come across these planks when I'm on my bike and moving with far more, erm, urgency
