Default CDTi Thermostat leaking

Hi there, well my CDTi suffered for a few months of a small amount coolant loss but I never found a leak until tomorrow, maybe just because the weather is really cold here in Rome. She is leaking from the thermostat housing which I replaced a couple of years ago and seems also that the leak disappears with warm engine. I know there are lots of how to's and threads about this matter, the question is: should I replace the gasket only or the whole thermostat and, also, providing that for ten years the car has been fine with original thermostat and the one replaced started to leak after two years, is that a normal behavior or the mechanic didn't gave the proper attention ?
Thx.
Canio

Replace only the gasket (a thermostat cannot be responsible for an external coolant leak).

As above post. The gasket was not up to the job required.

Could also be the Mechanic was not up to the job either.--

A BMW part? Surely some mistake?

The O ring that sits on the pipe going into the thermostat housing is worth replacing seeing as you are in there.

I recently also had a leak from my thermostat housing and noticed it was coming from the metal pipe joint into the thermostat. Removed the pipe after unbolting it from the back of the engine and found 1/4 of the o ring had disappeared! One new o ring and a few cuts and bruises and it was back to being bone dry!

My leak from the stat was only the o-ring, too.
Bug ger to get to, though.

...well things are getting worse on my CDTi, this morning I've spot coolant coming from both side (right and left) of the engine undertray. Quite sure that RH side comes from the thermostat, the question is now ... from what f...g part of cooling system can come the LH side leak ?
I do not want order and buy a complete cooling system so any help appreciated...
Thx once again, Canio
