can i just change over the receiver in my car and use that fob? or will it still have to be programmed to the car?

There are two parts inside the key: the transmitter for the door locks / alarm, and the transponder chip.

The transponder chip is matched to the immobiliser box, the transmitter to the BCU. Neither is matched to the receiver, sorry to say. The receiver just takes the signal and passes it to the BCU.
