My post obviously wasn't clear Simon, thanks for your input to avoid confusion. I am, personally, well aware that IS does not help when the subject is moving.

Oddly enough, although I have IS permanently engaged on all my lenses, I haven't yet managed to use up the first charge in my battery grip.

Those batteries just seem to be going on forever.

Having used IS, I'll not be buying a non IS version of any lens in future if there is an IS version available.

The only thing I discovered is that it NEEDS to be switched off if using a tripod, otherwise the whole shebang becomes mightily confused .

One sometimes sees such markedly differing opinions in reviews of supposedly identical lenses as well.

It seems to me that any two apparently identical lenses can suffer from variable quality control.

Something to think about I suppose, if considering buying a lens from an on-line retailer.

So many times I have heard people misunderstanding what IS means so I felt obliged to comment in this thread even though I am aware that most of us have been using IS lenses for some time now

Depending on the age/model of the lens, some IS lenses have the ability to "sense" when you are using a tripod and will automatically stop the IS from working. They do this by detecting when the vibrations fall below a certain level, if this happens it is assumed the camera is mounted to a tripod (or otherwise secured) and therefore image stabilization is not required.

I accept that the 2X has a cost with regard image quality, that is why I bought the 1.4X.

This ebay seller kerso has one listed. £839.

I have had 2 lenses from him with no problems and next day delivery.
From what I have heard he buys his stock from the USA.

I've had lenses from Kerso as well - no problems there.

Expect to pay BIG bucks in import charges if you buy from the Far East.

"Guaranteed no tax charges" means absolutely nothing.

I bought a remote control for my camera from that bloke, and no problems at all, however when I emailed him for a price on a 55-200 zoom and a flashgun he never replied so i bought from Microglobe.

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/...tabilized-lens

but they are a lot more expensive.

I want this one:

I might be able to scrape up the £199 if anybody wants to donate the other £4000

You can play with mine (if you pardon the expression...!) at a future meet if you like. Fantastic quality, but very heavy.

It's available for a lot less (though still expensive) at Mifsuds where I got mine from:
