Sounds just about right. Viton rings is the answer.

What does this sentence mean? Is it a cryptic message or can we all share, we are trying to make sense of what might have happened to the guy, so we can help.

Well filled up the expansion tank and carried on, set the ipk to test and watched the temp. It reached 105 at its highest but stayed around 90 all the way to Rhyl.

The expansion cap is a 140, and of all seems OK now so hopefully it was just an airlock.

Thank you for all your help and advise, you might be surprised to know the recovery guy didn't even open the bonnet before he said " headgasket probably gone these are known for it".. 🤔

Just a thought, is your cooling fan coming on? Stop start through those roadworks with a caravan on the back, it needs a fan pushing air through the rad, as you aren't going fast enough for natural cooling.

Yes the fan is working, I have not long fixed it.
Regarding the head gasket comment I just laughed and then watched his face as he opened the bonnet and said " oh, its diesel, probably not the head gasket"

I would run the heater on hot for a while make sure water circulates but consider a drain down and refill with anti freeze before winter.

do let us know if you find a fault and what it is.

good luck

It may not help immediately, but overfilling the expansion tank can cause problems with the discharge of coolant, especially if the cap had not been refitted properly after "topping up". As suggested, the MAX level is almost on the bottom of the expansion tank, and should not be exceeded. Once hot pressurized coolant finds a way to expel it will and take a lot more with it, therefore reducing that remaining to too low a level, thence inducing overheating.

Good luck.
