MK1 Tourer Tailgate Licence Plate Fitting

Quick query, as above, looking to fit a smiley plate on the back of my tourer using self tapping screws rather than adhesive tape but before charging ahead was wondering if there is any hidden dangers behind that the screws could impinge on?

Shouldn't be any problems there, but you could try running the screws in without the plate in place just to check it out.

Make sure to protect the drilled holes against moisture entering. By drilling you'll be breaking the rust protection on the metal. Are you screwing them on for a specific reason? Using double sided trim tape on a clean dry surface I haven't had a problem at all with plates falling off: on either the saloon or tourer.

And I've done 80k+ with them taped on in all weathers without loss. The surface of both the car and plate must be clean (and that means clean with spirit - no dirt or wax residue and don't touch with bare hands) and dry. Use good quality trim tape in vertical strips, 4 pieces equally spaced is sufficient. Then it needs 48 hours without getting wet. For the first month I checked mine beginning and end of every journey... and they're still there three and a half years later.

My initial thoughts were that the bigger plate would be more secure with screws rather than double sided tape but feedback would indicate otherwise so double sided it is, at least for now. Cheers.

I've just fitted a smiley plate to my saloon using double-sided adhesive foam tape. Like all things, the results depend on the quality of the stuff used and surface preparation. A big name brand of tape, 15-20mm wide (eg Sellotape or 3M foam type) properly applied in vertical strips across the surface will never, ever detach.
