Fuel leak urgent
Hi all, I have a big fuel leak on my 2.0l diesel.
I've just used half a tankful going to the other side of the city and back. I didn't notice a smell before I set off, but as I was driving I smelled fuel. When I got back fuel is dripping off all the front of the engine bay. I have felt round the fuel pump thingy next to the battery box and it is dry. I noticed the open end of a pipe and I need to know where it should connect to, and if I have lost a pipe while standing at the side of the road. Piccie of pipe below. It is situated beneath and in front of the fuel pump thingy. The leak has stopped when I turned the engine off so it must be after the pump where the problem lies. Thank you.

just been out to kook at mine.......... and it's exactly the same as yours (nothing connected to what looks like a bleed nipple), so my guess is that the problem lies elsewhere.

Do you mean the silver coloured thingy upper left?
That's the end of the clutch system bleed pipe. The 'connector' is actually the bleed valve. All that is normal and not the source of leaking fuel. Have you checked the fuel rail? It might be coming from the spill/recirculation pipe that sends excess fuel back to the tank. Item 14 here:https://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID001958 You might ask someone to check it do a leakback test on the injectors. TC |

Don't know if this helps but, when I changed my under bonnet pump I found the pipes connecting the pump/filter underneath etc were almost rubbed through..remove the battery and battery box to get access..
If the pump has gone it usually leaks from the top plastic.. A big leak like you suggest should be easy to spot, you might also remove the engine cover to see better. I would just add be careful around the High Pressure system as the pressure is way past that required to give you an injection injury which is major trauma.. Check the pipes that go from injector to injector they perish over time and can leak a surprising amount of fuel.

Found it
T cut was right. n the return fuel pipe caps 2 and 4 were not properly clipped in place and the whole of the rail/pcv area was flooded. I got one of those coolant checkers which is a plastic tube with a bulb on the end, and used it to suck quite a lot of fuel out. I put loads of kitchen towels into a carrier bag and squirted it all in there. Guys this is my fault entirely. I had the rail disconnected to change the pcv filter and didn't check they were secure when I finished So, thanks for the info about the clutch bleed pipe, and thanks al who took an interest. Lesson learned and a reminder to people who DIY to check, recheck, and then check again My next question is how long does it take for diesel to evaporate?
