However the networks frown on the use of tethering to payg sims and will disconnect once they realise that is what you are doing. I originally was using a 3 network 321 payg tariff in my current tablet, took them a couple of months but it was eventually disconnected as their terms say a data sim should be used. As mentioned I'm in Cornwall at the moment, I'm on a campsite with free wifi but probably because of the distance and the amount of equipment connected it's basically useless most of the day. That's what I do, just buy a couple so you'll always have one when needed. I think 3 want £20 to top up once the data/30 days is used, I just throw the used one away and activate the next as and when required.

Can they be activated whilst away, just using the computer, dongle and sim? Or would I need to be able to make a phone call to activate the sim?

No then, another question... If I were to buy this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Three-3G-N...item58b0e63d7a Which is a nano sim, whereas my dongle needs a standard sized sim, if I were to adapt is to actually fit, would there be anything to prevent it from working in the dongle? As you can see they are £5 versus the £8+ they seem to want for a standard sized sim. I've just had to adapt a standard sim, to fit a phone which needed a micro sim.

For a couple of quid you can get an adapter that the nano just clicks into Harry.

So other than the standard being much more expensive than the nano, is there a difference in the allowed usage or what it will work with?

Not as far as I know Harry, I normally go a micro sim which fits one of my tablets and use a mini sim adaptor if I'm using the other.
