Remember Giff Gaff runs on the o2 network which sometimes struggles to get 3g in all areas, especially low population ones. I'm currently in deepest Cornwall, my o2 network phone can only manage gprs, whereas my tablet on 3 is receiving 3g/hpdsa. Granted you may be using an antenna with your dongle which would help with reception.

My solution was to trawl ebay and buy the cheapest 3 mobile broadband sims with 30 days/1gb data I could find, currently using one that cost £7.00 and have another ready to go that cost £5.31.
The 3 I found was very good coverage with Samba - that's a solution I need to look closer at, if they can just be put in a drawer, ready to use when needed.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Default Dongle

Hi
just a point of interest no need to use dongles anymore

Tether phone to laptop tablet or other phones using wireless settings

Also a lot of camp sites now offer an Internet connection using wireless
Shops, shopping centre's, Mcdonalds offer free wireless connection if you require it
Regards
Steve

Good points Steve.

However the networks frown on the use of tethering to payg sims and will disconnect once they realise that is what you are doing. I originally was using a 3 network 321 payg tariff in my current tablet, took them a couple of months but it was eventually disconnected as their terms say a data sim should be used.

As mentioned I'm in Cornwall at the moment, I'm on a campsite with free wifi but probably because of the distance and the amount of equipment connected it's basically useless most of the day.

That's what I do, just buy a couple so you'll always have one when needed. I think 3 want £20 to top up once the data/30 days is used, I just throw the used one away and activate the next as and when required.

One last question...

Can they be activated whilst away, just using the computer, dongle and sim?

Or would I need to be able to make a phone call to activate the sim?

Apparently they activate as they are plugged in - no need for a phone.

No then, another question...

If I were to buy this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Three-3G-N...item58b0e63d7a

Which is a nano sim, whereas my dongle needs a standard sized sim, if I were to adapt is to actually fit, would there be anything to prevent it from working in the dongle? As you can see they are £5 versus the £8+ they seem to want for a standard sized sim.

I've just had to adapt a standard sim, to fit a phone which needed a micro sim.

For a couple of quid you can get an adapter that the nano just clicks into Harry.

So other than the standard being much more expensive than the nano, is there a difference in the allowed usage or what it will work with?

Not as far as I know Harry, I normally go a micro sim which fits one of my tablets and use a mini sim adaptor if I'm using the other.
