The whirling sound appears to be the unit ejecting the disc, I put it back in after cleaning it but it didn't do any good and as I was talking to the wife about what to do next the unit ejected the disc on its own.
How does one go about lubricating the unit? Trevor

Mine's been doing this randomly as well. When I re-inserted the disc I peered into the slot and could see that it wasn't being withdrawn fully into the drive. I don't know how to lubricate it because I haven't tried yet! I'm hoping that with the casing removed, sufficient access will be possible to the moving parts.

I've just seen someone who knows abit about these items and after checking it over and disconecting the unit he reckons the lazer isn't reading the disc either the disc is not in properly in or the lazer needs cleaning. Taking the cover of and cleaning it your self is not easy, so he suggests rather than send it away to be done get an upgrade or a new unit. Does anyone have any info on this matter.

You're right, he does know a bit about these items.

As he agrees with you then he knows as much as you, and as he's in the I.C.E. trade I expect he knows more than you.
