Air con O ring lubrication.
I'm thinking of fitting my air con condenser and replacement pipework next week. I have some new O rings for the joints but I'm wondering about lubrication when fitting. I imagine PAG oil would be preferable but I don't want to buy a full bottle just to use a smear so I'm wondering if it's okay to use petroleum jelly or silicon spray which I already have in the garage ?

I changed mine about 4 weeks ago .
If you can stretch to it change radiator at the same time. It just makes sense you can build the whole package up with new rad everything cleaned ect and then you know that it's all sorted. Now I'm sure someone will shoot me down as they usually do . But I just glanced over the seals with WD 40 Had a re gas and no issues with it. While it was in bits I cleaned everything on the engine and inner wings. Wire brushed front of X member rust proofing along the way .

Hmm ! I have some red rubber grease but I've googled molykote and it claims to swell the rings for a good seal. Just need to find a local supplier as I can't wait for ebay.
Any other suggestions welcome Gents. |

The elastomers supplied for our vehicles are all products of the evil oil industry not rubber. Couldn’t imagine there are any true rubber products on our vehicles today though. They are typically EPDM or Viton, sometime nitrile depending if low ambient, and/or low pressure applications. The intercooler o-ring for example is possibly Nitrile/EPDM, hence when it touches hydrocarbon swells up significantly. Molykote 111 silicon grease (or derivatives) is the lubricant I recommend, after having experience of qualification testing at 430F/23kpsi for long durations the elastomers showed little sign of damage using Molykote. It’s also a good clarty consistency and is good at keeping water out from and electrics etc, but makes for horrible sticky mess sometimes when trying to work on things. I also use it on brake callipers pins and back of pads. Try and avoid use on close fitting components such as a grease guns with steel pistons, the piston can gall up quite easily.
