Sadly VW's image for quality relies more on the thud of a closing car door than genuine durability.

As I have said elsewhere, the best Audi/VAG diesel was the 1.9tdi (Red i), which is what Audi VAG fans say. Around 2005, they switched to the 2.0L diesels, which put additional ancilliaries on the cam belt, making it more susceptible to failure. My old B5 Audi A4 suffered a tensioner failure on an ancilliary belt, my later B6 Avant 1.9TDi (2003) had a fantastic motor, but an alternator clutch fault was spotted by the indie VW specialist before it failed, and I had it replaced at 135,000. They start to snatch, and you can see and hear the tensioner jumping as it snatches., and it isn't long before either the belt, clutch or tensioner goes bang. But with reasonable maintenance, those engines are easily capable of 300,000.

I had a Tiguan 2.0 TDI as a lease car for 3 years. Other than 1 service it ran perfectly for 30,000. I now have had a Seat Alhambra with the same engine for 6 months and so far so good.

Hi.
None of the current diesels in my mind are going to prove the excellent reliability of earlier offerings from PSA & VAG. I had an Audi 80 with the AAZ TDI unit and a ZX Turbo with the XUD engine, the XUD was wonderful and the Audi good too till the silly front pulley chucked it. My mate has a Toureg, the new model and it is a 1.4 petrol, other than a little turbo lag it is very good. Time to move on from diesel to new generation petrol engines then it will be Electric and that's it!

Come on fella's. This thread is starting to read like one on another forum talking about the horrors of owning a Rover !! No offence Trevor, isn't there a slight contradiction in there? Your Audi was great till it blew up.
Seriously though. Good and bad in all. Improvements have been made to the engines and some types of DSG boxes have (in the past) given a lot of trouble, depending on the type. Nothing is bombproof and there will always be problems with any car. I'm not losing any sleep about my 170CR or its 6 speed wet clutch box, no nightmares about my DPF. I'm much more concerned about the lack of walnut and complete absence of soul. If I can't introduce any of the latter, that's the only reason I would get rid. Nige |

The 2.5 diesel wasn’t bad. I had a A6 Avant with 500k on clock.. engine and gearbox were sound and it was really economical

What's the problem with it Matt? Mechanically the Phaeton is very similar to my Touareg.

Ill raise my hand, and it pains me to say it as I have worked for a VW dealer for over 15 years, and have to agree the modern diesels aint what they were, EGR and DMF problems are all too apparent and not good enough...... The old 1.9TDI pd as in Mk4/5 and Bora were a bit noisy but very strong and simple, the PD engines do seem to last.
The 1.4 petrol TSI 122/125ps engine are very good and I've never heard of one failing, and driven sensibly will do 45mpg.....DONT go for the twin charged 140/170ps unless you run them on Super Unleaded the heads fail! seems to be the most reliable car you can buy is a Toyota Corolla 1.6, Astra or Focus 1.6, all straight forward petrol twin cam engines without turbos.....having been around all of them I confirm they all seem good.
