Fitting after-market heated seat pad....good / bad idea?

Hello all

If I bought an OEM seat heater, like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HILLINGTO...QAAOSwf5Fcr3E0 am I right / wrong in thinking I could wire it up to the under-seat loom (my car has the leccy seat loom in) and dash switches (which I've bought) and it would just work as if original? I.e. do the rover heated seat elements take the normal 12V off the power bus?

While I'm here, my public apologies to madeupname for not being able to take his wonderful offer of very-good-value seats. He is a very kind guy and a super member of this club. I wished I could have taken them, I really do.

Not answering your question, but these in theory would be better than the original fitment. For me the main problems with the original heated seats is the fact that they have a thermostat that switches them off too early and they never come back on. Yes, apparently there is a fix for this, I actually bought some thermostats over a year ago but still not got around to fitting them.

The other issue for me is the original switches have a timer in them. If they just switched on or off they would be better. The VW UP we had, left them on as long as you wanted. Really nice when my back was playing up.

Saab's were the same, stayed on as long as you wanted and you could also regulate the heat, Hot, Very Hot and I dare you!

I have looked at some of these aftermarket kits and seeing if the original system could be modified to stay on. I wonder what there thinking was for it to switch off after such a short period?

after market for me fitted some to the ZT before i sold it, the after market pads are fairly cheap and made from carbon and heat up quicker

I'm sure there is a set other members have used, waeco springs to mind but that's not correct

I am sure you could probably gut the switches and remove the timer element, turn it into a simple on/off

Gutting the switch would be preferable if possible as l'm sure the original pads would be more than adequate if allowed to stay working.

Hi Mike,

So, getting the seat heat to work while the switch is ON and independent of the timer can be as simple as disconnecting (or snipping and insulating) either the yellow or orange/white wire?

That would be a simple solution, alright. Or, am I wrong and it isn't that simple?
