Possible source of new radiator fans
I have a friend who owns his own garage, he has a variety of cars through his workshop.
Today he had an BMW X5 in for some work and the front was off the car, the radiator fan and shroud were on the bench and I noticed they made by Siemans. It looks very similar to our cooling fan and even the way the fan fits to the motor looks similar. Could it be that that when our cars were on the drawing board they raided BMW parts bin? |

Would be great if they do fit. I tried a new type of MG/Rover fan with the spindle pressed onto the fan blades - a while later they did a helicopter trick and while the repair with superglue seems to be holding, I think the old type with the three legged bayonet fitting was superior.
Would be good to see more pictures of this type, what year was the BMW, any part number? Swedish scrapyards are littered with BMWs and very few Rovers. Had a look at ebay BMW X5 fans but there seem to be many different kinds. Keep Sherlocking. Regards ps Just viewed a fan here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_K0KPHsteA 1.59 in gives a clear picture on the same three legged mounting. Last edited by vitesse; 1st July 2019 at 19:44.. Wondering if these are just single speed fans. Will probably do the job though as the engine size is much larger in the BMW. Checked the price at our on-line scrapyards, cheapest £120, a joke - a few more pounds and you can buy a brand new one on ebay from Poland.
Like the idea of bolts securing the cover, makes repair easier compared to the Siemens Rover lug type. Now just need some brave sole to see if they fit. Regards |

Thanks, but for my part I'd rather stick to the original type rather than Kenlowe etc. even though I had one on my Vitesse. I know Jules does replacement fans, and there's the "original" spindle fit one available at not too bad a cost.
Would be nice if these X5 fans are a straight fit (except for the wiring but easily solved) and the apparent ease of getting into them sounds ideal for the home mechanic. Regards |

If I could find one at the right price I would have a go at fitting it but as you say they seem a lot of money.
From a bit of Internet research there seems to be two main versions, a before 2006 and a post 2006. I have no idea what the difference is and the one I looked at yesterday was similar to the one I found on Ebay. As you say the wiring would need modifying but if it bolts on with little or no modification that has to be a good start and the diameter is the same as the existing one. They are also over 400watts so a similar power. The cheapest new one I have found was from AliExpress for £128 including delivery. |

We now have to pay all sorts of charges on stuff bought in China so for me this Polish one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-BMW-X...0AAOSwh99cyUds would end up cheaper but I’m unwilling to spend that sort of money on a gamble, especially as my fan is less than a year old and the superglue seems to be holding (nervous though).

Or just repair what you've got! It's a lot cheaper and very reliable.
3 speed: renew brushes. 2 speed: fit gold resistor in place of silver. The only requirement is to be a vigilant driver:

Just exploring alternatives other than the press fit spindle. If there is a BMW (Siemens) product that a) fits and b) is easier than the lug type to repair, surely that's interesting. And just how would you repair fan blades that have decided to go into helicopter mode on a press fit spindle? If you have more ideas then I'm all ears. https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=296386 Regards Mike |
