Fried engine
I think I've cooked the engine. Will now only start under protest with jump leads and will idle under protest with my foot resting on the throttle. Clouds of oil smoke coming out of the exhaust. Yellow engine management light came on just before I switched off. TBH the engine seems to have an appetite for oil and I think I may have got caught out.

I'd be suspecting the turbo Carl.

Did it overheat before ??? Why do you thing you have COOKED the engine.
The turbo doesn't do anything on tick over.------( except leak oil if the bearings are shot. ) You say it has a thirst for oil. If it's been burning it then you would, for some time, have had a cloud of smoke following you around.--- |

That doesn't sound good Carl. A compression check might help shed some light on the fault.

re cooked engine
There seems to be a couple of issues with it at the mo. The overheating problem recently (to which I never got a single response to). On the journey home last night it started to lose 'oomph' and I could see I was leaving a smoke trail behind me. I also suspect the turbine cartridge but I've always had to keep my eye on the oil level as it does have an appetite for it.

Very unlikely to be pistons and rings but a sudden trail of smoke--- ----
A rapidly expiring turbo.-------YES. Low oil---sudden loss of pressure and up to 60,000 rpm.-------A turbos worst night mare Last edited by COLVERT; 18th July 2019 at 15:13.. |

Is there too much oil in it? I dont know if the 1.8 is the same as the diesel, in that you can get a false reading on the dip stick.
