Vauxhall gearboxes
My son has had an Astra almost since new - it was a demonstrator- a sporty one at a stated 150bhp.
It had a new gearbox at 43k Miles - now needs another at 87k. Seems the bearings go. And it’s a known issue - so be warned if you see a cheap Astra/Vauxhall Last edited by Darcydog; 28th March 2019 at 06:01.. |

Probably an argument for gearbox oil change if it was possible.
There is only one winner on this stuff that is sealed for life and its not the customer. |

Is this the same M32 box as on Some Fiats ?
Our shot its bearings at 48k had it rebuilt with the new uprated kit and all ok , but cost nearly 1600 in total ( inc labour) with a new clutch/ DMF C

Our Zafira has the same M32 gearbox, it's getting noisy on 5th/6th gear apparently that bearing goes first. See my prices I had quoted to me for a gearbox recondition and clutch change https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=293687 Highest is £2064!!
I had a recommendation for A&S in Halifax, Yorkshire. Run by a guy called Andy, they just seem to recondition these gearboxes all day. Another forum member has used him and said all was very good cost about £300 to recondition it, they replace bearings whilst the box is in situ, he travelled from Scotland to get it done. https://www.facebook.com/pg/AnSClutc...ology/reviews/ I'm seriously considering travelling to get mine done, just need to fix the rover first! With regard to gear oil changes, I've tried and can't find any info on it nor can I see a drain plug. Something that is so simple on the jatco box seems virtually impossible on the GM one. |

The problem is on the M32 gearbox and concerns size of bearings used in the design. This is not a Vauxhall gearbox but a Getrag and is also used on some Fiat and Alpha cars.
There are solutions in the form of upgraded gearbox end structure and bearings. |

Hi, That is correct Andy simply uses one of there ramps. I traveled to him from Scotland as I would not entertain the prices up here from so called "specialists". As a mod he overfills the box so that the end 6th bearing as actually submerged rather than getting a splash now and again. I will add however that when I got there and he took the car for a quick drive he soon told me that if I had been local then he would have sent me back home and told me to come back when its alot worse but as I had traveled we had it done anyway. I still have the old ones in the garage, to the eye they look fine, I just panicked when I heard the whine. Shortly after this was done I sold the car as going back to a petrol car was not for me after coming from my previous 2.2 diesel vec and diesel 75.

Had a similar sounding problem in a Honda Jazz recently. Ended up stripping the gearbox, replacing the bearings then reassembling.
As in the last post, I then slightly overfilled to try and improve lubrication on the bearing that had previously failed. Sounds like a more common fault than it should be - part of a built in failure to sell more cars? (Once the original owner has sold the car it becomes so easy for the manufacturer to blame previous drivers? And new car buyers don't normally care what happens when a car is >5 years old as they have a new one to drive) |
