Might be simpler to just swap the tank complete with pumps from an early car mate, that would be my choice, grab that early one from Mick if he still has it.

It was something I thought of doing at the time Andy, but, I wont be able to get under the car because of where it is so at the mo cleaning the tank out and replacing the inners is my only option.

Hi Dave. Is it not possible to jack the car up and put some ramps/ axle stands under it? Wish I lived closer. I have an SGS jack that lifts it 525 mm high enough to put it on axle stands

The goop inside the tank after looking at it and prodding it about is liquefied, and moves about freely, probably a by product from cheap dirty fuel or from a garage the last owner used , it did come from London..... The petrol smells very much like paint thinners, I have an old brush to clean somewhere.... I am going to pull the internals then clean the tank with a mix of bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar topped up with water, then leave for a while to do its job, I've read that this is a very good cleaning solution to use. Typical tho, no job is ever straightforward. |

I have read that this damned ethonol that the ‘greens’ are forcing the government to allow petrol companies to put in fuel is causing some kind of growth in the tanks of bacteria to further cause owners more expense. They call it an advancement?

A bit more done today so far.
I drained the tank, 20 Ltrs of petrol to dispose of now. I then sprayed white vinegar in the tank, it quickly dissolved the black stuff which is more than likely the plastic from the floats, the pools of it correspond with the position of the floats. I’ll leave that in there for a couple of hours before cleaning that out. The fuel filter has fared no better than the pump with the disintegration of parts in it. The replacement system is from the earlier cars, the difference is quite remarkable, I just have to work out where the extra piece goes..... Some pics. |

The tank is clean, very clean in fact, the white vinegar certainly destroyed whatever muck was in there.
Fuel filter side is in, there is an extra piece on the early type that I have no idea as to where it fits, I know its by the pump but.....thats for another day. |

Not sure Dave, but does it not fit in a bracket on the bottom of the tank?Ask Jules in Conwy.

Draining the tank effected me more than I thought it would, even tho I tried to keep a distance from breathing the fumes, I ended up with a swollen throat and a banging headache later in the evening.
Some anadin and a good nights sleep and the next day doing nothing has me sorted. The petrol has obviously deteriorated quite alot, the smell of it resembling something like thinners. Thanks for the heads up regarding Terry Nicholas, very much appreciated, also thanks to trikey trying to explain where it goes, after seeing a pic of where it goes speaks volumes. A call to Terry is next..... |
