Battery Sign & Burning Smell
Help needed or suggestions on what this could be please, while on the shopping run today it started to rain nothing new the car stated to mist up so i switch the demist on and then we get this burning smell coming into the cabin and the battery signal on the dash flash saying battery charge.
Managed to get home safely lift engine and can smell what i would call a sweet smell from the belt and alternator area any opinons or ideas as what this could be is most welcome. I have a feeling it may be the alternator or could it be the belt slipping, i have just managed to take some snap shots of the singal flash on the dash screen below cheers Arctic 1st pic with engine being reved to 2000. 1 2nd pic again 2000 revs but this time with A/C on 2 3rd revs 2020 and the charge fault light as come on also running with the A/C on 3 4th this time revs at 2060 this time no A/C on 4

Check if the alternator has seized, or the belt is not tight, for any reason.
But be careful, don't dive until sorted. A broken belt on my 1.8T got lodged under the cambelt, shifted it a couple of teeth and destroyed valves and piston and liner. That was an engine out rebuild for a 10 pound cheap belt! |

Could it be the Alternator Belt Tensioner, they tend to go and the belt will then slip and not charge the battery, happened to me, until I changed the tensioner Stu |

I would guess that the alternator is knackered.
Have you got a multimeter to check the voltage across the battery while its running? |

Hi Mick
It was a multimeter that Rob (trebor ) brought over ont an alternator, i had moved the car earlier in the morning before he came when he arrived it would not start jumped it and again the smell reading from battery was 10.65 i think after we disconnected the leads and it was running on its own then we tested the battery on its own 11.38 again i think anyways i have it on charge for now meanwhile another spare battrey connected with 12.36 volts showing stated fine but after a few mins smell of burnign again so we concluded it must be the alternator. Hopefully i should have one midweek from a great member on here Sean, i also noticed though that there is a clatter sound which i think maybe the pulley which i also intend to get and change because if the car is still running on it's original one it as done well to reach 136000 as still need to investigate further tomorrow early nest week if possible cheers Arctic
