How much have you lost or gained on selling a car?
Any answers greatfuly received
Best I had a Morris Minor 1956 that I bought for £400 in 1998 and sold it for £1100 after 3 years ownership. It had to go because I couldn't afford all the work needed to be done to be brought up to its original showroom state. Worst I bought a Honda Civic 1.5 for £4200 second hand in 2001 and had it on finance. I had to take it back after a discrepancy with myself and my manager at the time as to staying to long with a dying client in social work and I told them to get stuffed in a more direct way and lost my job. Hence the garage wanted £1000 to take it back after only less than 1 month of ownership.

I've never made a profit. ALWAYS lose hundreds, sometimes a lot more.

Interesting question! I worked this out recently and over the 10 or so years I've been driving, and between the 20 or so cars I've owned I've spent £65000 and got back about £42000.
The best was a 75 actually, bought for £600 and part ex'd for £900. Worst by far was a Passat cc. Bought for £18000 and part ex'd for £11000 18 month later. It was a ice motor though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've always 'lost' as I keep them for a long time. Using the last 2 car as an examples, depreciation costs were:
ZS: £2,500 in 9 years = £278p.a. R214: £2,780 in 13 years = £214 p.a. Can't complain at that - Rover gets you a lot of car for your money!

Thanks so far for the replies.
It seems everyone has lost out one way or another like myself but rronson had a result However I did have a Yugo45a as my first car at 24yrs old I bought a secong Yugo from the same guy who was a dealer from home for £600. It was a Yugo Sana and smelt and drove like a new car. It had the Fiat Tipo 1.4 engine in it but the clutch was stiff. I simply took the clutch cable of my old Yugo (which was being claimed back on the insurance after someone car in the car park burst into flames and burnt the back of my paintwork and tyre) fited it to the San a walla. No problems. Because of the body weight on these cheap cars it used to burn of Ford Orions from the traffic lights Google image that doesn't do the car any favours imho My mate had seen this and needed a car with loads of boot space for his drum kit. Sold for £1100 EDIT I never really liked him or he could have had it for what I paid.

My Worse loss was on an Omega Estate, I paid 15k for it when it was just over a year old and sold it 2 years later and got £4500 for it. In that time it had a cam belt at about £500 and some sensors because it was running badly.
The guy I sold it to rung me after a couple of weeks and asked if I had the radio codes as the Alternator had failed and he could not find them, it had cost him £500 for a new one. Since then I have bought older cars including a few Saabs and on a couple I have actually made a small profit after a couple of years use. |

Bought my first car, a rover 25, off a mate for £180, sold it a year later as I needed something bigger and got the ZT, got £300 for the 25.
Did better with my moped, bought for £500, rode round for a year, taking it from about 8,000 miles to nearly 17,000, only cost me a clutch cable, and cat removal, on top of fuel and oil, and sold it for £750 18 months later. Worst has to be my trike, paid £2250 for it, spent £500 sorting undeclared problems of the sellers making, just sold for £990. Previous worst was a bike I bought for £1000, over 2 years I had to fit a new petrol tap, clutch plates and springs, a rear caliper, and a new rear shock, and sold for about £300. |

Not really, I'm a huge sum down overall. That £300 didn't make much of a dent! I suppose an average of £1000 depreciation per car or £2000 per year isn't too bad. This is why I now buy cars of relatively small value, that way the most you can lose is the price paid for the car and so far that tactic is working out for me!

Bought a Morris Minor from a guy who kept his dog in for £40..the dog had eaten most of the interior, I didn't click at the time but the reg number was 491VY sold for £700 and 10 years later saw the number on an Aston driving along the M3..happy days
Just checked number is now on a 2016 Jaguar. |
