Is there a guide for rear subframe and arms removal?
Hi all,
After a rubbish MOT result I have advisories for some corrosion to the rear subframe and arms - something which seems very common now given the ages of these cars. I am told by the garage that they can be cleaned up and painted as it's nothing serious. I was just wondering if dropping these components on a driveway is a DIY job and if a guide exists on these fine forums? My mechanical experience is not huge, until recently it has just been oil and filter changes but I've also recently replaced ARB bushes, droplinks and arms on my partners 25, which I found rather enjoyable. Working on the rear end of the 75 looks rather less enjoyable, though. Any thoughts and advice welcome and a guide would be awesome if one exists. |

The way I do it is as follows:
Remove exhaust. Remove the upper arms at the rear hub Remove the lower arms at the rear hub Disconnect the abs sensors and the brake warning sensor Place a jack under the main subframe body to take the weight Undo the four subframe bolts that hold it to the body. I may have forgotten something as it’s been a while since I did one lol but that gives you the basic idea. Remember, plus gas is your friend.

Oh for sure.
I intend on buying some sort of bulk pack prior to attempting the job. Thanks for the pointers, they should prove invaluable. Couple more questions from me (will create new thread in the technical section if necessary): 1. I also have advisory items for "Nearside/Offside rear sub-frame pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement". Are the bushes replaceable on the rear subframe? I see them in the diagram on Rimmers but no part listed - maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing though. 2. Does the exhaust need completely removing or just dropping slightly? If removing completely, how far forward does it need removing? Thanks. |

it is indeed a diy job and not that hard. I would recommend a Haynes manaual
If you have a rear anti roll bar there will be additional work to trikey's post. when putting everything back together the car needs to be sitting on its wheels when tightening the bolts of the arms and perhaps the sub frame. macafee2 |

As Ian's post above. When finished, spray everything with nice runny underseal that will stop anything getting at that lovely new paintwork.---
