Default Diesel beats my V6 on every score

I've possibly been fortunate in being able to run a Tourer diesel (remapped 160; 135Kmiles) for the last 7 years plus a V6 2.5 (90K). They are both in fine fettle, both autos, and have almost identical specs, though the Tourer doesn't have the TV. (Come to think of it the V6 doesn't either).
I've always treated the V6 as my fun car as it replaced a Stag, and I only use it around town. However yesterday I thought it deserved a decent run so we took it on a 200 mile round motorway trip. (mpg 35.3; diesel would have been maybe 42mpg on a similar run).

Sadly I found it a poor second as at 70mph - and a smidgeon possibly beyond - it just seemed hard work (Yes the VIS motors are working) whereas the Tourer just eats up the miles and always seems eager to push on with little effort and particularly in Sports mode, will happily zoom off.
So if I were starting all over again I just wouldn't bother with a V6, just plump for a re-mapped diesel, and enjoy a far more satisfying drive.

I agree, the V6 isn’t the quickest thing unless you rev the nuts off it, it’s a shame it didn’t have the low down grunt of the old ford Essex V6

20 mpg is about average. Got it down to 8mpg, and got to change the rear tyres after 4,000 miles. If you are going to own a V8 400 it just needs to be used. And the bonus is the NOISE ..............

I use the V8 more than the Banana.

Had my Scimitar GTE for 13 years with that engine. Best of both with low down grunt and it would rev happily when pushed. Lovely to drive as a manual with overdrive. Yes I miss it.

I’ve had both too and found the Diesel more willing and nimble but the V6 was astounding when I drove home from Jules place in North Wales. Best 180 miles for a long time. Might have helped that he’d just renewed the vis motors.

I love my V6 and I never bought if for the fuel economy...

...equally my Volvo people carrier* is good for about 8 - 9mpg on a run

*by people carrier I mean my double decker bus.

The diesel i had was way more powerful than the 2.5 kv6 but was a lot noisier
and not quite as refined as the kv6.
I loved the diesel up and around the hills but idling and noise wise it was not so great. Could never get it to a totally smooth idle.
Now having driven a new car diesel i realise how much refinement has been made over the last 15 years.
Just bought a new jeep grand cherokee 3 litre v6 diesel and hard to tell if its a petrol or diesel at idle and its very quick.
