Diesel starter motor fitting?

I have 2004 Rover 75 diesel. Needs new starter motor. How difficult is it to replace

Very easy.

Engine cover off, and you can see all the bolts you need to access. Only gotcha is the rear one which holds the cable on, you do that by feel instead of sight.

Apart from that, it's a 10 minute job.

If your starter is duff, what are the symptoms? These Nippon Denso starters work forever and a day, and are quite overspecced for the application. The only weak point is the solenoid contacts, identified by a clicking noise when you try and start the car.

A £12 kit from Ebay fixes that though

Thanks for reply. Just now and again instead of starting I get a noise like the bendix cog is turning but not coming into contact with the fly wheel. If I keep trying it eventually connects and starts immediately. Nothing to do with present problem I think but I recently had a new alternator ( when battery went dead ) and a new battery about 6 months ago. The starter problem comes about every 6 starts - Dave.In case anyone is interested VJO is the reg of my Alvis.

As part of that kit, you get a new solenoid plunger as well as the copper contacts.

Sounds like a £12 fix will cure your ills.

I had similar problem with mine just clicking. So I did what you suggested Dave I gave the contacts a good clean and it works lovely. Clicking gone

Strange - normally the alternator is the easy one and the starter the hard one to change.

Thanks for all the help. I've ordered the kit. My son is the mechanic so when he does it I'll watch carefully and try to tell everyone if he hits any problems. I've always tried to drive big cars - being a pensioner it helps getting in and out. Before the Rover I had a Granada Saphire and before then a Seven series BM ( what a bag of sh.... ). The Rover is a delight and I hope to keep it for yonks. Although I don't drive it so much everyone else in the family uses it as their second car. My youngest daughter at the moment drives a 4x 4 Audi and now she says she will look for a 75 estate - Dave

Fantasy garage time, but I always wish they'd made a 75 estate 4x4 diesel, something like the Audi allroad.

I have a similar problem. My car is now refusing to start either in Neutral or Park - just the click. However, if I move between the two gears while operating the key it will start, after a few failed attempts. Would this be the same thing?
