trinery switch
went to have my aircon recharged today and was told that the pressures were all over the shop and that it was more than likely the trinery switch. a couple of questions if anyone can help. 1. what does the trinery switch actually do?(i kind of guess it controls the fan and that it has something to do with the aircon) the guy i spoke to said it would be alright when the car was moving as this forced air over whatever it was that needed to keep cool im assuming (he was a bit vague as to what it actually did) and 2. is it expensive to replace? the aircon does seem to run colder when the car is moving so what he was saying seemed plausible. thanks for any help you can give guys!

Almost certain your problem is that your cooling fan or its resistor has failed. an unbelievably common problem. Start the car, select demist inside the cab and go to the front of the car, the rad fan should be running continuous.
if not, almost certain your fan or its resistor has failed. Resistor: Look through your front grill, if you can see a silver block at the 2 0'clock position then that is almost certainly your problem. Easy repair. If you have no resistor there it will usually mean a replacement fan is required as the fan will be the older three speed type. If the fan has recently failed the fan could be repaired but it is not always successful.

As my fellow forum members have said the problem will be the fan not the trinary switch. But to answer your question it triggers a faster fan speed when the air conditioning requires it and it protects the compressor from excessively low and high refrigerant pressures. If I were you I would find another air conditioning service agent. Simon.

Thanks guys, it is the three speed as I checked behind the grill and there's no silver box. Fan not working when the demist is on so, I guess, it's a new fan. Any ideas on what it should cost? Thanks for the help again, think I'd have give up on this car if I hadn't found this site.
