Default Rear hub nut.

Can someone tell me the socket size I need to remove the rear hubs. I have bought the complete backplates and shoes from Matt and hope to do the job soon. I understand the securing nut can be very tight also it is in a bit of a recess so a socket will be required. Any hints would be most welcome.

32mm socket required, if the inner race of the bearing stays on the shaft when you remove the hub, take the handbrake shoes off for easier access, then tap a chisel (Gently) into the edge of the bearing and it should pop off.

Also check the backplate for rust around the shaft, remove any signs of rust or this will break the seal on your new bearing and give you ABS issues.

Thanks Trikey. I was not meaning to fit a new bearing only to replace the backplate and shoes etc. Do you think a new bearing is required?

Whilst I'd prefer a socket as you can use a socket to torque the nuts up, this will probably undo them

Ahh that was my tired eyes not reading the post fully, if your bearing is ok then there is no need to replace it, just clean up the rear of the bearing (where it sits against the backplate) Before refitting.

Thanks gents for your comments. Will buy a 32mm socket later today and arrange some sort of torque bar to loosen the 32mm nuts.

They are not ridiculously tight as I changed one of mine last week. Retorqued to 210 nm.

Just be aware if planning to buy a new nut for when you put it all back, you often find they supply a 36mm one.

Also be carfull which socket you buy the laser impact one wall is too thick to fit in but the Halfords lifetime guarantee impact one fits fine.

Also a 3ft breaker bar is sufficient to crack the nut

As the Op is doing both sides then swapping the old nuts should find a fresh bit of rim to stake.
