Had same problem when we moved in 1978, newly married and neighbour helpfully suggested that we moved our bed onto another wall! Next house we made sure that there were solid walls.
You could try sound deadening quilt and batten out the walls, then plasterboard and skim, would only lose a couple of inches but messy and costly. |

I am afraid it's why detached houses fetch more proportionately on the market.
I am fortunate to have always lived in detached ones, but when I visit friends I am immediately struck by how much I can hear. Can never cure noisy neighbours in the garden however! |

I have to say, it's a minefield. One mild mannered request on this subject can spoil a neighbourly relationship in a blink! And a perceived retaliation is always seen as being over the top. I recommend the typical Rover driver's solution - a wide self-satisfied smile in the middle of a handshake. Oh, with gloves on, at arms length.

Reverse psychology is very useful. One could start the conversation off with an apology i.e. " I hope we don't disturb you as we have realized that sometimes we have our volumes up a bit? " and temper the rest with tactful comments. I have no doubt the first would be "oh, do you hear us?" so possibly answered by " sometimes, but it's only to be expected! "

If you speak to your local builders merchants, they usually have specialist suppliers who will visit your home and tell you what to do.
I've done this before and got very useful advice. Phil |

Thank you all.
Certainly something to think about. I've lived in terrace houses since leaving home and have always been able to hear some noise, such as light switches, wardrobes etc, but here it's on another level. They have a toddler who uses the party wall as an activity centre I think.. They have spring door stoppers that he repeatedly activates causing shockwaves to resonate through my house. I did ask once what the sound was and they laughed and told me, so I don't think it would be worth saying anything else. Anyway, I'll speak to the company mentioned and try my local builders merchants.

I may have a go myself as it sounds quite straightforward. Does no more nails really work? I remember years ago using it to fit skirting board and it all fell off! You've given me some confidence that all is not lost so thank you.
