Well... it wasn't the filter, the pump, or the crankshaft sensor. It was the electrics! The garage tested the fuse box and it was apparently putting out very random results.
They pulled it apart and put it back together (I presume doing stuff in between) and now it runs well!

Thanks for all your help everyone - I'm sure I'll be asking advice for other things soon enough, if Mr Haynes can't help
