Default Sat. nav. drive repair...

Often read here about improper shut-down procedure goosing the drive.
1. Exactly what is it that gets b.....ed. I thought the reader laser was non-contact so what gets damaged?
2. Whether its the Mk3 CD or the Mk4 DVD version I'm presuming it's the laser that goes U/S so can they be economiclly repaired and if so is it a DIY job?
I've had a quick look on the net but not been able to find anything other than some reference to a 'black' laser for the Mk4...
I want to know because the Mk4 I obtained some months ago isn't recognising a disc being present - if it's a simple/cheapish fix then I'll have a go myself or maybe some wizard on here can help me get sorted.
