Default Memory Lane.......

Here's a couple of photos I took on Saturday at Prestonpans in East Lothian of the new Steam Train, Tornado on it's way through to Newcastle, from Edinburgh Waverley. Should get a lot of you old timers slavering!!!

This, as most of you will probably know already, is the first steam train to be built in Britain for almost fifty years.

That last one is a pure lucky shot as I wasn't 100% ready and the Tornado is coming past the platform at speed!

And a wee zoom shot....

It really was a wonderful sight and Mrs G stood on the footbridge overlooking the track and felt the heat from the steam as the train passed below.

I like the look of the train. I'm often taking the kids to the Bluebell railway to have a look at steam engines. They love it.

It really was a terrific experience, short though it was.

I'm not sure what the train is going to be doing as a "job" - perhaps touring the country, evoking memories of the past?

I said at the time that at least parents who were there with their kids could explain clearly why we say things to them like "choo-choo train".

60163 Tornado is booked to haul a number of mainline steam rail tours this year, in many parts of the country, and will also be spending time at a couple of preserved lines like the North York Moors Railway and the West Somerset Railway. The current mainline schedule can be viewed at the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust website:

On the fourth photo...

You can see the name TORNADO - but whats the crest above it? Looks kinda military (RAF) plus the blue colour is very similar to the blue used on RAF Crests.
