As far as I understand it both the 90k figure and the 40k figure are correct.
Housing for original pcv = 90k miles service (not sure when the toilet roll should be changed) Whole BMW "fit and forget" unit service interval = 40k miles I changed mine at 95k miles to the BMW one. When faced with having to buy a housing in addition to the filter anyway I decided it would be be better to get the fit and forget one. At my annual mileage I wont need another one for 5 years..assuming I still have the car. |

IIRC someone came on here to inform us that BMW have stopped fitting the new type filterless unit and started to fit the filtered type again, as there were issues.
I put a new one on mine and chose the filtered type. I change the filter and gaskets (£10) at each service (15k miles) for piece of mind. Chris

The PCV filter is to compensate for differences in the crankcase pressure. Its secondary function is to stop 'blow by' gases including burnt oil from contaminating us all with fumes.i.e. reduced emissions.
To stop emissions they fitted a filter. The problem is that with time they get clogged up and the older the engine (more blow by) the quicker they get clogged up. The reason BMW fitted a filterless one is because the filter can get blocked, so its possible to get turbo failure or even the dipstick blowing out. So they introduced the filterless one which probaly increases the emissions a little. Above it says they are going back to filters. This may be because when they make a change to an engine, they have to have it retested for emissions and it may have failed. Solution, fit a filter again. My PCV filter at 60k was clogged and I changed it immediately. I will change it again at another 30k and if you have a very high mileage diesel I would check it more frequently. A new filter is a lot cheaper than a bust turbo or oil seasl somewhere else! With brake fluid, its probably the most ignored service item on a car. |
