Default Breakthrough!!

Firstly, many thanks to all who contributed ideas to solve this problem which were all passed on to the guy at Freelander Specialists who was doing the job. And a special thanks to Trikey who I know spoke to him by phone, although it was agreed that T4 was unlikely to help. Anyway, I got a call late this afternoon to say that the mystery misfire had at last been nailed.
After double and triple checking everything, he decided he would have to go back into the engine he had just rebuilt. He was ready to take the rear head off but decided to check everything up top first. To cut to the chase, he discovered that somehow on re-assembly the timing tool must have slipped slightly without being noticed and the rear exhaust cam was one tooth out on the timing belt. After correcting that and re-assembling he reports that the engine at last runs perfectly!
The car has now been there so long that the MoT has expired; I know there is a Covid extension but it seemed silly not to get it done so it's staying there a few more days - there's a recalcitrant airbag light to sort out but otherwise all should be good to go and I'm now expecting to have the car back by early next week. It's been a long haul and I'm now seriously missing the car, but glad to know it's been repaired to the best it can be.

Great news Crispin, it will be like having a new car when you get it back.

Terrific news . It's also good to hear that Freelander Specialists persisted with the solution - a contacr worth keeping.

Enjoy the car

He’s a good guy, you could tell he was very frustrated when talking to him, he had tried all types of different things.
