![]() I thought a few of these might crop up over time and I shall kick it off with one I have just come across.
On my main PC, this one I am on now I have a 1TB hard drive split into two partitions, both have been upgraded to Win10 one partition I kept everything and the other did a clean install. On boot up the screen comes up with the choice of which one to boot to, the default is the side with all my progs on and a 10 second timer before it starts, this was set in MSCONFIG, however this morning I decided to boot to the "empty" partition but the mouse was not activated giving me no way to click on the partition I wanted. I went back into msconfig and increased the time out from 10 seconds to 30 but still the mouse had no power at the stage of boot, not ideal if you want to quickly do a swap. The only way for me to boot the drive I need is to make it default in msconfig. This problem will only come up for people with a dual boot system and so far I have not seen any mention of anyone with this: Any ideas anyone of how to get the mouse active at that stage of boot?? ![]() I had this too on my work PC. It's a known problem with upgrading to windows 8/8.1 and 10!
Can't remember the cure, but have the link on my work PC. ![]()

![]() Yes, keyboard is dead too at that stage.
What I noticed yesterday too while swapping from one to the other is: When altered to default in using settings and recovery the pointer is there but for only one reset, going to a reset again and mouse and keyboard are dead again. I went into Bios and although I do not have a floppy drive I set it to keep USB live hoping that might be it but not so. I will keep trying, as soon as it`s fixed (if it can be) I will post it up. ![]() Ken, assuming that your PC has the PS/2 keybpoard/mouse ports, this will solve your problem.
USB keyboards & mice are all fine and dandy until you need to use them under DOS with no drivers loaded ![]() |

![]() I did step 1 and it worked, but you may need step 2 or 3 as well.
(Not my info, got it from Tomshardware ![]() Hope it helps ----- STEP 1. Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box. Type regedit in the Run box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\atapi Right-click atapi, point to New, then click Key. Type Controller0, and then press Enter. Right-click Controller0, point to New, and then click DWORD(32-bit) Value . Type EnumDevice1, and then press Enter. Right-click EnumDevice1, click Modify.... Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK. Exit Registry Editor. Restart the computer. STEP 2. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems and download fixit. It was unable find the problem but, just go through it. then STEP 3. - Click Start , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. - At the command prompt, type the following six commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command. powercfg.exe -setacvalueindex 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0 powercfg.exe -setdcvalueindex 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0 powercfg.exe -setacvalueindex 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0 powercfg.exe -setdcvalueindex 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0 powercfg.exe -setacvalueindex a1841308-3541-4fab-bc81-f71556f20b4a 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0 powercfg.exe -setdcvalueindex a1841308-3541-4fab-bc81-f71556f20b4a 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0 After the restart the problem was solved.
