The thermostat connections were carefully put on, red rubber grease was used on the seal and jubilee clips used on the hoses.

What was the hole in the block like? I have seen a couple of cars where the aluminium has corroded and required some sealant to ensure a leak free seal due to the wear.

you have probably seen them with bits of broken old plastic stat still embedded in the bottom edges and like mine when i did mine there were gouges verticaly where someone had used a screwdriver or similar to prise the bits out. i did use emery cloth on mine to rub them out and yes the hole was slightly oval afterwards. i used oversize rings on the stat and still it sealed ok. i would recommend the use of the red rubber grease applied liberally in the oring grooves before fitting the rings back on and in the bore hole. the other advantage of this grease is it protects the rubber rings and once it dries out after the engine has been up to temperature a few times it sets like a wax giving a good seal.

Rubber grease is good, but if you want the best, try molykote 55.

i hope the I.M.G gasket has been removed and a new one replaced. they dont have much holymer seal on them to compress when re used. when i did mine last i smeared the alloy surfaces each side with holymer to add a bit more sealing against leakage. it aso lets you position the gasket aligned in place to drop the manifold on to. with a leak and misfire it does point to the gasket . if so plugs 1 and 3 i believe should show signs of this. pain to revisit the job but at least you will know where you are.

Hi Simon ,
No email received, when did you send it? Gasket was put on carefully I was thinking of putting Hylomar on them but decided it was not necessary. The hole in the block was ok and all the old thermostat was removed. The faces of the inlet manifolds were rubbed down with wet& dry to ensure the surfaces were properly clean. I look forward to hearing from you Simon to try and bring this saga to an end. Martin |
