I have found the wiring is fitted with an adapter for the previous Clarion radio so I can delve further. Thanks for the advice and sorry to the OP for hijacking the post but it has been a great help to me.

Steering wheel controls now working. The interface fitted was compatible and just required a different patch lead which I picked up from a local specialist for the princely sum of £7.50 who advised that Sony and Panasonic use the same adapter.
