Default Help please? Problem opening passenger door from inside

I know I have just joined the forum but thought I may as well try first as I am baffled.
Just bought a Rover 75 Connoisseur SE 1.8 Manual reg jan 2004.
All of a sudden the passenger door will not open from inside the car. Opens okay from outside and remote locks and unlocks fine. I have taken off the door card and the cable is attached to the internal door latch but I am now totalt baffled where to look next as I am unable to see the other end of the cable as it is inside the door frame.
Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated.

it needs to be under tension when attached to the door handle, the cable fits into a holder meaning the connection between the cable and handle is very tight. This should be the case

I can see the problem now but how do you get to it?
The cable is disconnected from the door lock end. I can see a hole in a plate at the end of the cable. Does this just clip onto something or is it broken?
How do you attach the cable to the lock?
